Orthodox Saints Icon Christina of Tyre

Commemorated on July 24 (New Calendar) August 6 (Old Calendar)

Saint Christina lived long ago, and her courage shines in Orthodox Christianity. She’s honored on August 6th on the Old Calendar, which is July 24th on the New Calendar. Her story is simple but powerful, showing faith and bravery. Let’s explore her life in easy words.

Saint Christina’s Early Life

Saint Christina was born around 285 AD in Tyre, a city in what’s now Lebanon. Her dad was a rich Roman governor named Urbanus, but he worshipped idols, not God. Christina, however, felt a pull toward Jesus Christ. Even as a kid, she prayed and wanted to know the true God. Her heart chose Christianity, which was risky back then.

Standing Up for Faith

When Christina was about 11, her dad found out she was Christian. He got mad because Christians were often punished by Romans. He told her to worship his idols, but she refused. Instead, she broke his gold and silver statues and gave the pieces to poor people. This made her dad furious. So, he decided to punish her harshly.

Saint Christina’s Trials

Urbanus locked Christina up and tried to force her to deny Jesus. But she stayed strong. Therefore, he sent her to be tortured. They whipped her and tied her to a wheel over a fire, but God protected her. The flames didn’t hurt her, and people watching were amazed. Still, her dad wouldn’t give up. He ordered more punishments, like throwing her into the sea with a stone around her neck. But angels saved her, and she walked back to shore.

Her Martyrdom

Finally, after many tortures, Christina was sent to another governor. He also tried to make her worship idols, but she kept praying to Jesus. So, around 300 AD, they killed her by shooting arrows into her heart. She died bravely, never giving up her faith. Thus, she became a martyr, someone who dies for God.

Why Saint Christina Matters Today

Orthodox Christians remember Saint Christina because she was fearless. Her story inspires people to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. On August 6th (Old Calendar), churches pray and sing about her courage. Young people like you can look to her as an example of trusting God no matter what.
