Commemorated on July 17 (New Calendar) July 30 (Old Calendar)
Saint Leonid was a humble farmer who became a holy monk. Born in Vologda, Russia, he lived a simple life until God called him to serve. His story shows how faith and hard work can shine even in tough places.
Early Life as a Farmer
Leonid grew up in the Poshekhonsk district, working the land. He was 50 when he had a dream. The Mother of God told him to find a special icon and build a church. At first, he thought it was just a dream. He felt unworthy, so he ignored it. Instead, he joined a monastery to pray and work.
Becoming a Monk
Leonid went to Kozhe Lake monastery. There, he became a monk and worked hard for three years. Later, he moved to Solovki monastery, baking bread. The same vision came again, urging him to follow God’s plan. This time, he listened. He knew he had to obey.
Saint Leonid’s Mission Begins
In 1608, Leonid traveled to Morzhevsk hermitage. He shared his vision with the abbot, who gave him the Hodēgḗtria icon. With this holy image, Leonid settled near Mount Turin by the River Luz. He built a small hut. However, locals feared losing their land, so they pushed him to a swampy area.
Building the Ustnedumsk Monastery
Saint Leonid didn’t give up. He built a cell in the marsh and started a monastery. To drain the swamp, he dug long canals, nearly 2 kilometers. One day, a snake bit him. He prayed, trusted God, and woke up healed. Grateful, he named a canal “Nedumaya Reka,” meaning “Unplanned River.” His monastery became Ustnedumsk, meaning “mouth of the Nedumaya.”
Saint Leonid’s Hard Work
In 1608, Leonid became a hieromonk, a priest-monk. He built a church for the Hodēgḗtria icon, as the Mother of God asked. The land was tough, with floods often hitting the monastery. Yet, Leonid kept working. He even started building a new church at Black Lake before he died.
Legacy of a Holy Man
Leonid died at 100 on July 17, 1654. He was buried at his monastery’s church. His hair-shirt, a rough garment, was kept to honor his hard life. Orthodox Christians still pray to Saint Leonid. His canals and churches show his faith. Icons of him are in churches where he worked.
