Early Life and Call to Serve
Paul grew up in a wealthy family but chose a different path. At 22, he left home secretly to become a monk at the Nativity monastery. His heart was kind, always helping the poor. However, he felt called to a deeper spiritual life, so he joined Saint Sergius of Radonezh at the Holy Trinity monastery.
Becoming a Disciple of Saint Sergius
Under Saint Sergius, Paul learned humility and obedience. He worked hard and followed his teacher’s guidance. For fifteen years, he lived alone in a small cell near the monastery, praying and growing closer to God. Therefore, his faith grew strong through discipline and solitude.
Life as a Hermit
With Saint Sergius’s blessing, Paul sought a quiet place to live alone. He wandered through forests and settled in the Komel forest by the Gryazovitsa River. There, he lived in a hollow linden tree for three years, praying silently. Later, he moved to the River Nurma, built a hut, and dug a well. For five days a week, he ate nothing, only having bread and water on weekends. His life as a hermit showed his deep love for God.
Founding a Monastery
People heard about Saint Paul’s holy life and came for advice. Though he loved solitude, he never turned anyone away. In 1414, with the blessing of Saint Sergius and Metropolitan Photius, he built the Holy Trinity church. A monastery, later called the Monastery of Saint Paul of Obnora, grew around it. Paul wrote strict rules for the monks to live simply and faithfully. Then, he chose his disciple Alexis to lead the monastery while he stayed in his quiet cell.
Saint Paul’s Legacy
Saint Paul lived to be 112, dying in 1429. His last words urged his followers to love each other and follow the monastery’s rules. About a century later, in 1546, his life story was written, and in 1547, he was honored as a saint. His example of kindness, prayer, and humility still inspires people today.
