Commemorated Aug 26 (New Calendar) September 8 (Old Calendar)
Saint Natalia, a young Christian woman, lived in Nicomedia with her husband, Adrian, during the early 4th century. They were married for just one year before facing great trials for their faith. Under Emperor Maximian’s rule, Christians were hunted and tortured. Saint Natalia’s story is one of courage, love, and devotion to God, as she stood by her husband through his martyrdom and faced her own challenges with unshakable faith.
Early Life and Marriage
Saint Natalia and Adrian were a young couple, both around 28 years old, living in Nicomedia. Adrian worked as the head of the praetorium, a government role. At the time, Emperor Maximian fiercely persecuted Christians, offering rewards to anyone who turned them in. However, the couple’s life changed when Adrian witnessed the bravery of 23 Christians arrested for their faith. Inspired, he declared himself a Christian, forever altering their path.
Supporting Saint Adrian’s Faith
When Adrian confessed his belief in Christ, Saint Natalia rejoiced. She was secretly a Christian herself and felt blessed that her husband shared her faith. Therefore, she visited him in prison, encouraging him to stay strong. “You’ve found a great treasure in Christ,” she told him, urging him not to fear losing worldly things like youth or riches. Her words gave Adrian strength, and she remained his rock.
Facing Martyrdom Together
The emperor tried to make Adrian reject Christ, but he refused. Consequently, the executioners tortured him brutally, breaking his hands and legs on an anvil. Saint Natalia, fearing Adrian might waver seeing others suffer, asked to place his limbs on the anvil herself. She stayed by his side, praying for his courage. When they tried to burn the martyrs’ bodies, a storm stopped the fire, and lightning struck some executioners.
Saint Natalia’s Trials After Adrian’s Death
After Adrian’s martyrdom, Saint Natalia kept his hand as a relic. An army commander soon wanted to marry her, drawn by her youth and wealth. However, she fled to Byzantium to avoid a forced marriage to a pagan. There, Adrian appeared in a dream, telling her she would soon rest with God. Exhausted from her trials, Saint Natalia passed away peacefully, joining her husband in heaven.
Legacy of Saint Natalia
Saint Natalia and Adrian are remembered as patrons of married couples in Orthodox Christianity, alongside Saints Timothy and Maura. A portion of Saint Natalia’s relics is kept at the Kykkos Monastery in Cyprus. Their story inspires couples to support each other in faith, no matter the cost. Through love and sacrifice, Saint Natalia showed that true devotion endures all trials.
