Commemorated April 27 (New Calendar) May 10 (Old Calendar)
Saint Simeon, a faithful follower of Jesus, lived a life of devotion and courage. Born around 10 BC, he was the son of Cleopas, Saint Joseph’s younger brother, making him Jesus’ cousin. He died in 107 AD, leaving a legacy of faith. His story shows how he spread Christ’s teachings and faced persecution bravely.
Early Life and Faith
Saint Simeon grew up in a family close to Jesus. As a young man, he saw Jesus’ miracles firsthand. These wonders led him to believe in Christ’s message. Therefore, he joined the 70 Apostles, a group chosen to share the Gospel. His early years shaped his strong faith, which guided his life’s work.
Role as an Apostle
As an apostle, Saint Simeon traveled to spread Jesus’ teachings. He spoke boldly about the Christian faith and rejected idol worship. His clear words and kind heart drew many to Christianity. Consequently, he became a trusted leader, helping others understand God’s love.
Bishop of Jerusalem
After the Apostle James, the first Bishop of Jerusalem, was killed around 62 AD, Christians chose Saint Simeon to lead them. As bishop, he guided the early Church with wisdom. However, his role put him in danger. Emperors Vespasian and Domitian ordered the death of all King David’s descendants, and Trajan continued this cruel decree. Since Simeon was related to David, he faced great risk.
Persecution and Martyrdom
In 107 AD, during Emperor Trajan’s reign, enemies falsely accused Saint Simeon of being both a Christian and a descendant of David. At over 120 years old, he was arrested. Despite his age, he endured days of torture with strength. Finally, he was crucified, dying as a martyr for his faith. His courage amazed even his judges.
Legacy of Saint Simeon
Saint Simeon’s life inspires Christians today. His feast day, April 27, honors his sacrifice. Some also remember him on September 18. The Church celebrates his bravery through hymns, like those by Theophanēs. His story reminds us to stand firm in faith, no matter the cost.
Saint Simeon’s life shows how one person’s courage can shine brightly. He faced death for his beliefs, leaving a lasting example for all.
