Bishop of Jerusalem
After the Apostle James, the first Bishop of Jerusalem, was killed around 62 AD, Christians chose Saint Simeon to lead them. As bishop, he guided the early Church with wisdom. However, his role put him in danger. Emperors Vespasian and Domitian ordered the death of all King David’s descendants, and Trajan continued this cruel decree. Since Simeon was related to David, he faced great risk.
Persecution and Martyrdom
In 107 AD, during Emperor Trajan’s reign, enemies falsely accused Saint Simeon of being both a Christian and a descendant of David. At over 120 years old, he was arrested. Despite his age, he endured days of torture with strength. Finally, he was crucified, dying as a martyr for his faith. His courage amazed even his judges.

Saint Simeon’s life inspires Christians today. His feast day, April 27, honors his sacrifice. Some also remember him on September 18. The Church celebrates his bravery through hymns, like those by Theophanēs. His story reminds us to stand firm in faith, no matter the cost.
