Commemorated August 18 (New Calendar), August 31 (Old Calendar)
Saints Florus and Laurus, twin brothers, were stonemasons who died for their Christian faith in the 2nd century. Born in Byzantium and later moving to Illyria, they faced persecution but stayed true to God. Orthodox Christianity honors them on August 18 for their bravery as martyrs.
Early Life of Saints Florus and Laurus
Florus and Laurus were born in Byzantium around the early 100s AD. Raised as Christians, they learned stonemasonry from two believers, Proclus and Maximus. These teachers also showed them how to live for God. Therefore, the brothers grew strong in faith, even in a world hostile to Christians. They later moved to Illyria to work.
Work and Miracles in Illyria
Around the late 110s AD, the prefect Likaion hired Saints Florus and Laurus to build a pagan temple. However, they gave their earnings to the poor and prayed constantly. One day, a stone chip blinded the eye of a pagan priest’s son, Mamertin’s child. The brothers prayed, urging the boy to trust Christ. His eye healed, and Mamertin also believed. Thus, their faith worked a miracle.
Defying Pagan Idols
When the temple was done, Saints Florus and Laurus took a stand. They gathered Christians, smashed the idols, and set up a cross inside. That night, they prayed under a heavenly light. The district leader, angered by this, burned Mamertin, his son, and 300 Christians. Consequently, the brothers were sent to Likaion for punishment.
Martyrdom of the Holy Martyrs
In their final moments, Florus and Laurus faced death bravely. Likaion ordered them thrown into a dry well and buried alive. Yet, their faith never wavered. Years later, their bodies were found uncorrupted and moved to Constantinople. Pilgrims, like Anthony in 1200 AD and Stephen in 1350 AD, saw their holy relics.
Legacy of Saints Florus and Laurus
The brothers’ courage inspires Christians today. Their story shows that faith can overcome fear. Orthodox Christians celebrate them on August 18, remembering their sacrifice. Their relics in Constantinople remain a testament to their devotion, encouraging young believers to stay strong.
